Bering Sea death toll now at 27
On Dec 5 the bodies of seven more sailors from the "Oryong No. 501" have been found in the Bering Sea raising the number of confirmed deaths to 27. 26 crew members were still missing.
Only two of the seven bodies found on Friday have not yet been identified. Meanwhile the recovery work was stopped due to a storm.
But the sea was now calming down in this area, winds were blowing at a speed of 12 meters per second, waves were no more than three meters high, and air temperatures stood at -2 degrees Celsius.
The relatively calm weather was expected to continue in the district of the search operation on Dec 6. A cyclone was rexpected on Dec 7.The search operation will be resumed on Dec 6 morning.
Korean vessels will be actively involved in the search operation. Six Russian vessels, which were currently fishing in this area, will help them. There are almost no currents in this area of the Bering Sea.
Probably, the missing bodies will be found within a range of 20 nautical miles from the site of the ship's sinking. South Korea's Ministry of Public Safety and Security sent a patrol boat and a chopper with 74 rescuers, investigators and other personnel on board to join the search operation and determine the cause of the accident.
