Maersk Line is set to introduce the largest container vessel to the country this week. The Managing Director, Public Affairs of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Chief Michael Ajayi made this known in Lagos when he took reporters to the site of removed wrecks in Lagos last week.
Ajayi said NPA was committed to dredging, so that the new WAFMAX would be able to berth in Lagos and make sure upgraded products deliver containers on time.
Maersk Line, he said, is focusing on and improving its already best-in-c1ass reliability.
"The vessel is coming into Lagos with about 4,000 containers. Eighty per cent of the containers are owned by Nigerian importers while the remaining 20 will go to neighbouring countries."
"With the coming of the vessel and the clearing of our waterways, other big ships are expected to call and boost the economy.
The vessel would improve our revenue base, save cost for importers and consumers, " Ajayi said.
