THE cost of building the New Doha Port in Qatar is expected to increase 20 per cent from US$6.86 billion to $8.24 billion due to the increase in global prices of some materials and supplies, according to an official close to the project.
The New Doha International Port, which will be linked to the mainland by an 8.5 kilometre bridge, is being developed in three phases. Phase three will include a container terminal, berths, an administration and customs complex and a tug and pilot boats berthing area.
The port development is expected to support industrial development in the area and will have a final annual handling capacity of six million TEU by 2030, reported the Doha's Construction Week Online.
The new port project, which covers a 26.5 square kilometre area, is scheduled to be operational in 2016 and will be one of the world's deepest seaports. China Harbour Engineering Company won the contract to construct the port basin and inner breakwaters in January 2011.
Project consultant Royal Haskoning is responsible for the project's master planning; the Scott Wilson Group has developed the conceptual design; Worley Parsons is overseeing the detailed design, while the main consultants are Cowi & Partners and Consult Maunsell, which is managing the project.
