Nigerian Navy in gun fight with pirates aboard Maximus ends in perp walk
THE Nigerian Navy publicly displayed suspected pirates arrested caught hijacking the 7,654 dwt Panamanian tanker Maximus, reported London's Tanker Operator.
The navy said it released the vessel following the gun battle with the pirates near Sao Tome in which one of them was killed. Two crewmen were also reported missing.
The tanker was escorted into Lagos following her release.
Maximus, owned and managed in the UAE, was attacked by armed pirates on February 11 in the Gulf of Guinea, off Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
There were 18 crew on board from India, Pakistan, China, South Korea, Sudan and Ghana at the time of the incident.
The pirates intended to sell the 4,700-tonne cargo of diesel fuel and renamed the ship Elvis 3, according to The Associated Press.
Two Nigerian naval vessels had tracked the tanker, along with another tanker reportedly called 'Dejikin", which would have been used to offload the cargo.
