Bulkcarrier grounded on Columbia River
On Mar 21, 2016, at 12.15 a.m. the "Sparna" ran aground in the main shipping channel while sailing outbound from Portland to Otaru on the Columbia River.
The Bulkcarrier got stuck in a narrow part of the river near Cathlamet after having hit a submerged object.
It took on water in void spaces, but the vessel's fuel tanks were not damaged. The Sparna had on board 218,380 gallons of high sulfur fuel and 39,380 gallons of marine diesel and was fully loaded with grain and was outbound.
The river pilot was still aboard when it ran into trouble, the Coast Guard reported.
The tugs "PJ Brix" and "Pacific Escort" were on scene to keep the "Sparna", which was slightly listing to port, stabilized while the ship awaited repairs.
Personnel from the Coast Guard, Washington Department of Ecology and Oregon Department of Environmental Quality have responded to the grounding off the mouth of the Elochoman.
The Coast Guard has not closed the navigable channel of the river.
