The burned out ro-pax ferry Lisco Gloria has now officially been declared a total loss. The underwriters have paid out an insurance sum to DFDS Lisco as the total repair cost amounted to nearly DKK 450 million. The remains of Lisco Gloria are still laid up at Munkebo. Several ship recyclers have been inspecting the wreck (with an intact engine room) in order to find a accurate price for the ship. Lisco Gloria was built in Szczecin in 2001 and was taken over by DFDS in July 2002. The first year under DFDS’ colours the ship sailed under Danish flag as Dana Gloria, but was transferred to Lithuanian flag in June 2003 and renamed to Lisco Gloria.
A devastating fire broke out in the early hours on October 9 while the ship was on its regular voyage from Kiel to Klaipeda. The Lithuanian crew and the 236 passengers had to be evacuated. Of the 236 passengers, 23 were treated for injuries.
The burning ferry drifted to a position three nautical miles off the Danish island Langeland where the vessel was anchored.
